GROWING LONG AND HEALTHY HAIR

This post has three great tips on products which promote hair growth and how you can get healthy hair in the matter of weeks!

As you might know, I love a good hair care post. I've done many current hair care routines and I've tried every product under the sun to help turn my hair from a damaged and brittle wreck into healthy and long, like mine used to be about 18 months ago. Why did it turn into a damaged and brittle wreck? I won't go into detail (check my other hair posts which explains more!) but it was because I used heat on my hair every day without heat protection AND I used extensions for volume. It wrecked my hair so much that it completely ripped out my hair from the roots in some places (luckily not noticeable but nevertheless, it left me regretting the day I ever started using extensions or extensive heat use).

So I've got three of my current top products for boosting hair growth whilst replenishing your dry and damaged locks. I have to say, my hair has never felt healthier now that I've been using these products and I've noticed a huge amount of hair growth on the area of my scalp in which the extensions ripped out.


We've all heard of Alpecin, right? Their shampoo is one of my absolute favourites for stimulating the hair follicles and I always notice hair growth when using the shampoo everytime I wash my hair (after a couple of weeks obviously! Not in a Rapunzel kind of way!)

So when I went to buy another bottle of the shampoo, I decided to pick up the Alpecin Caffeine Liquid Hair Energizer (£7.49). It's like a hair tonic and it's the same texture as water, so it just feels like you're pouring water on your scalp. I really should have taken a picture without the lid on so you could see the nozzle but my camera was running out of battery and I had to quickly take the pictures before it died as I've currently "misplaced" (lost) the charger. Basically it is like a nozzle which lets you directly apply the product to your scalp. I then turn my head upside down and massage my scalp just to help the process!

The next product is for turning your dry and damaged locks (which look all splitty at the end) into soft, glossy and repaired strands and it's the OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil. I've tried and tested countless oils, the majority with some form of argan oil ingredient in them but all to no avail. I don't particularly like spray ones (even though I've tried those too) because they don't seem to be very thick in consistency and if you've got badly damaged hair, you'll need a thicker consistency. I've tried pouring out ones (I'm sure there's a better name for that but I've got my Saturday brain on), and they aren't thick enough either but this one is just right. It's thick (but not unmanageable!) and it's super easy to apply and it also doesn't dry into your hair straight away (no matter how dry your hair is), which I love because it sits on my hair for awhile without immediately drying in and making you feel like you've got to apply more!

Finally, we have the miracle of all three. Castor Oil. Yep, this is for sure a miracle. Remember earlier when I said I noticed a huge amount of hair regrowth in the area the extensions pulled out? That is down to this bottle of goodness. Beware, it's difficult to work with, it's thick, sticky and smells a bit odd but it's definitely worth it for the results. I have a little trick to make it a bit more manageable and to make it smell a bit nicer...mix it with a little bit of the oil I mentioned previously and you've got a great balance! I've noticed a good inch and a bit growth in the area the extensions yanked out. You can also use this on eyelashes and your eyebrows if you wanted to! I got this from Holland and Barrett for £9 odd but I think you can get it cheaper on the internet! 

There we have it! My 3 miracle products to get that swoosh-worthy hair!

BACKCOMB IN A BOTTLE - DO THEY WORK?

As you may or may not know (if you've read my hair care posts, you will!) I love a bit of backcomb for texture and volume...actually, I love it a lot. However, years of backcombing and brushing my hair causes stress and tension and believe me, your hair will break. 

I thought mine could withstand the day in day out, constant strain but I was so wrong and boy am I paying the price for it now. No one and I mean no one loves big hair as much as I do (I can promise you that) but after an eye opening realisation of the current state my hair has been reduced to because of doing this (as well as using heat products and extensions), my hair is quite frankly unrecognisable to what it used to be like. I know that sounds dramatic and I'm so lucky to have what I have - but I just want to warn you that if you backcomb - please, please stop or at least don't do it every day because even though you think you're not harming your hair as much as people tell you, you are and within 6 months, you'll be able to see the difference. I won't go into the damage clip in hair extensions have caused because THAT is a whole other story in itself which I will post about probably next week if you'd like to hear about it (let me know in the comments)! 

Anyways, back to the point of this post (sorry, I usually go off on a tangent!), because of my strict no backcombing vow (I'm trying to stick to!) I've decided to try a few products to give the same effect, just with less damage. Two of these products I've used for quite a long time in conjunction with backcombing my hair using a fine tooth comb, however I wanted to test what they are like alone - with no comb to help the process. The third product, I've only recently tried but I'll tell all below so keep reading!

 L'Oréal Paris Studio Line #TXT Volume Supersizing Spray

The first product is the L'Oréal Paris Studio Line #TXT Volume Supersizing Spray. I really like this product. Even though it says it acts as a backcomb in a bottle type spray, I'd say it is more for texture but I would sometimes use this to set the backcomb I'd manually create. I really find this product helpful to use all over the hair so that when I put it in a bun, it won't just slip out. This product is great on freshly washed hair, for the reason mentioned previously. Have you ever thought dry shampoo just isn't enough to provide the volume you need to keep it up all day? Turn your head upside down, spray this all through it and scrunch your hair with your hands and let it dry for a few seconds (with your head still upside down) and also spray a bit on your fringe (if you've grown your fringe out) upside down and scrunch that up too. Flip your head back and give it another spritz throughout and let that dry. Only a couple of seconds should do it for the drying process! I like to use this product not just on the ends but to the roots a little too. Not too much though because you don't want to block the follicles and stop them from breathing and consequently, growing. So overall, I do think this product works. It could give a little more texture and it would be great if the backcombing aspect properly worked but for £2.53 (on offer - usually it's £3.79) what more do you want!? Cheap and affordable and does the job, simple!

Schwarzkopf Got2B Glued Blasting Freeze Spray

Okay, the second product is my holy grail hairspray which acts as a "freeze spray", called Schwarzkopf Got2B Glued Blasting Freeze Spray. You might have read about this product in a previous post of mine and if so, you'll know how much I love it! This one acts as a freeze spray (which is literally tornado proof) which gives you that extra bit of firmness than a usual hairspray. You know when a hairspray is described as "Extra Hold" or "Maximum Hold" - nothing has a stronger hold than this. I do also include a caution with this freeze spray - it dries your hair out - yes it brushes out as most hairsprays say they do, but when you brush out this one, you'll notice your hair can become very dry... At least if you use as much as I do!! This one not only works as a typical hairspray though, it works as a great backcomb & texturing spray. A great tip for achieving a backcombed effect with this hairspray with no physical backcombing with a comb is to simply:

1. Part your hair and where you'd normally use your comb, spritz the freeze spray in place and use the bottle, yes the bottle of this spray and wrap that piece of hair around it, placing the bottle in at the root where you have just sprayed. Wrap the hair around as if you are wrapping it round a velcro roller.
2. Hold the can in place so the freeze spray you've just applied to the hair is tightly wrapped around the freezing cold can. As the diameter of the can is larger than a typical normal can of hairspray, this makes the volume you're creating also larger. I'm quite rubbish at explaining this as you'll probably tell... Sorry!
3. Take the can away and there you have it, you have some serious volume going on without physically backcombing!

This product retails for approximately £2.60 in Savers and elsewhere like Boots, it's a little more expensive at about £4 odd. Still very affordable but I always get mine in Savers because I use so much of it!!

Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray by Redken

This next product is one which I purchased last week. It's the Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray by Redken. I have trouble purchasing this in stores so I purchased this on Amazon for £14.26 for 250ml. I was super looking forward to trying this product because I saw it on TV (I think it was on This Morning) and so I thought I had to give it a go! I have to say, although I really, really loved this product I probably wouldn't repurchase it because it didn't last me long at all. When I say it didn't last me long, I don't mean on my hair, I mean the product as a whole in the bottle didn't last long. Also it did a very similar job to the L'Oreal #TXT Volume Spray I spoke about earlier. It's very similar in product so by paying £11.73 more for this product, it's really not worth it. Unless you can afford to dish out nearly £15 everytime you come to the end of it (which I can't!) then I'd stick to the L'Oreal. However on the plus side this product acts as a finishing spray as well, so if you want the backcombed look, spray in at the roots but if you'd rather it just act as a finishing spray lightly dust your hair with it at the end of finishing your style. It  has a great hold and doesn't leave your hair looking sticky or looking like you have too much product in it. I think why it possibly didn't last me too long was because I was using it as a backcomb spray and a finishing spray so it was getting double use. Overall, great product; love the finishing spray aspect of it but for the price, I'd stick with the L'Oreal but if it was a bit cheaper (around £6/7), I would likely try this one again.

BE BOLD

Hi everyone!

Today's post is focusing on the 'bold look' as you probably guessed from the title! I established the outfit first and gelled every aspect of accessories, makeup and hair around that. I love to start with an outfit because for me, it's kind of like joining the dots... you get the rough outline with the outfit and pull everything together so it creates an overall theme. At the bottom I'll link to where you can get everything mentioned in these looks...some items are quite pricey (too pricey for me!) but the point of the post is to inspire new ideas and maybe show how you can use some items you already have in a different way!

HAIR CARE THIS PARTY SEASON

So as Christmas is rapidly approaching, (where did November go!?) it's not to be forgotten that it's also the party season with work do's and nights out with friends and family! During these dressy occasions, it's important to treat your hair with respect whilst your teasing, curling, straightening and goodness knows doing what else to your hair!

Firstly, a great product to use during the washing and drying process is 'Umberto Giannini: Mend My Hair Rehab Salon Smooth Damage Repair Keratin Spray'. This is a fantastic product to use to repair and mend broken and strained hair which is already damaged to prevent further damage. It possesses Keratin and grapeseed oil; both of which targeting damaged hair in order to repair it. In case you didn't know, Keratin is a protein which we have in our hair so providing extra Keratin within this product gives you an extra boost of protein which is great for repairing and growing your hair as well as strengthening it and restoring it's condition. This product is only £6.99 and is one I really love and feel it's doing it's job of strengthening and repairing my hair!

 

The next product I have for you is the Tresemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray. This is obviously for use during the blow-drying process or when you're hair is dry and you're about to use heat on it. With the party season upon us, we all love a curling tong and straightening iron to give more of a polished look so it's crucial to use a heat protection spray! 

Again, with this product being from the Keratin range of Tresemme, it provides your hair with the protein it's stripped of when heat is applied to it. Due to the Keratin in it, it also reduces frizz and is gentle enough to use on colour treated hair which is great because with events coming up; if you're touching up the colour of your hair, you don't want to colour to be damaged by the products you use! I really love this heat protection spray because it does what it says - protects your hair against heat whilst leaving a lovely sheen in the process!

EXTREME HAIR GROWTH REVOLUTION

Today I'm really excited to share this post I've been waiting to write for a very, very long time!

So I'll give you a little background into why I chose these products first of all. Basically, when I was on my journey home from America in September, whilst reading one of the many magazines I purchased to occupy me during the 9 hour flight, I came across an article in one of the magazines recommending this product. At first, I was excited to try it but the more I thought about it, the less I believed in it, because let's face it, there is no secret way to grow your hair faster than it naturally grows...or is there?

If you've read any of my other hair posts, you'll know all about my experience with going from really long, healthy hair to shoulder length, damaged, brittle and thin hair due to the strain I put on my hair through heat products (without protector - I know!) and general mistreating it through brushing it, back combing it etc.

So to say I've tried just about every hair product out there claiming to "boost hair growth" or "repair severely damaged hair" gives me a good enough reason to become reluctant to believe what this new product recommended in the magazine claims to do.

But, I thought, I've wasted more money on products that haven't lived up to their hype so why not bite the bullet and try this one? Admittedly, spending £30 on a shampoo and conditioner set could be seen as a little unnecessary or extreme, but I was determined to try every product until something worked, and guess what? It did.

This miracle of a product is called 'Fast'. I quite enjoy the name of as it does exactly what the name suggests, it makes your hair grow... and fast.

It says to use this product daily however I don't wash my hair every single day. Also, I only use this product once a week so I will use it and then when I wash my hair next, I will use a different product and then use this one a week later. I've done this in order to preserve the product due to it's cost however I've still noticed a massive difference in my hair length even only using it once a week. If you want to use it daily, give it a go, the results might be even better!

I've used this product for about 2 months now (a little goes a long way!) and so I refrained from writing this post until I gave it a good go and now that I have, I feel like I can give it an honest review.

Before using this product, my hair length was about 1-2 inches longer than my shoulders. As previously stated, I've used this product for about 2 months and unbelievably, the longest part of my hair is literally now halfway down my back. Due to the extreme damage and stress I put my hair under, unfortunately not all of it is the same length because other parts are more damaged than others (the sides for example). If all of my hair was the same length, it would be back to the length I used to have it which was very long!

Now for the science-y bit:

This product is also on the top of my list due to the fact it has NO Sulphates, Parabens or DEA. What does that mean?

Firstly, Sulphates are agents within the product's ingredients that create the foamy lather. Due to being inexpensive, the majority of hair products actually contain them. However, whilst we might love a lathery shampoo, Sulphates can cause extreme damage to your hair shaft, hair follicles and your scalp. Sulphates can cause dry hair and scalp due to them actually eating up all the natural oils your hair produces. It can also increase scalp irritations like eczema and worsen dandruff due to its drying agent, leaving your scalp feeling irritated and tight. Sulphates also severely damage your hair follicles, resulting in hair loss and also lack of hair growth as a result and this is worsened if you don't thoroughly wash out the shampoo! If you do colour your hair and you're not yet put off by using Sulphates, you might think again when purchasing your next shampoo which contains them as Sulphates aggressively strips the colour from your hair, leaving it dull and lifeless!

The most common Sulphates found in hair products are: Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), Ammonia Laureth Sulphate (ALS), TEA Lauryeth Sulfate (TEA) and Sodium Myreth Sulphate (SMS). 

Parabens are a type of chemical that is used as a preservative to keep products fresher for longer. They also are deemed to prevent bacteria growth. It's also used widely in beauty and hair products (as well as toothpastes in some cases!). However in recent years, increasing concerns surrounding this chemical has resulted in manufacturers steering away from using it in many of their products due to the possibilities that it has a connection with some forms of cancer.

The forms of Parabens that are included in some products are commonly known as: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. Keep a look out for some of these chemicals in the products you buy, you might want to see if there is a Paraben-free alternative!

Now for DEA: This, in it's full form is called Diethanolamine, which along with chemicals
like MEA (Monoethanolamine) and TEA (Triethanolamine) are hormone disrupting toxins which form nitrates and nitrosamines. These are extremely common in lots of products as well as hair products, including bubble bath, facial wash and soap. They have a nasty impact on drying your skin and hair as well as cause irritation to your eyes!

Know that you've read all that knowing that FAST doesn't contain these three elements, that in itself is a massive plus for me! I'm also not being sponsored or paid for this, I just wanted to share a product that has finally worked for me.

I purchased this product on the Boots website as you can't buy it in the store (at least not where I live!)

This Week's Bargain Buys

Hi!

First of all, I just want to apologise for the lack of posts this week, I think I've posted only once! I've just moved house so things are very hectic and crazy but I'm trying to get as many posts up as possible!

This week I've bought a couple of great bargains which I'll share with you in this post! I hope you enjoy!

Hair: 

Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray

I'll start with my favourite hairspray and that is the Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray. I can't tell you the amount of times I repurchase this because it must be at least 100 times, no joke! I know that this hairspray is used by males also but it's such a great, long lasting, super strong, immense hold that I really don't care, if it works, it works and it definitely works. I could be in the middle of a hurricane or a rainstorm and nothing would move. I'm not exaggerating either so if you're looking for that super strong hold then look no further! 

You can get this spray in Boots, Tesco, Superdrug, Savers... you get the idea but the place I always buy it from is Savers because everywhere else sells it for about £4+ and Savers sell it for £2.64 (approx) however this week, Superdrug had a sale on and I got it for £1.99 so of course, I bought five... I would have bought more but I cleared the shelf!

Face:

Simple Radiance Brightening Facial Wash

The next product is something I've just purchased for the first time and that is the Simple Radiance Brightening Facial Wash! I bought this for £1.99 in Home Bargains so it was definitely a bargain! I used this product this morning and I honestly couldn't see much improvement in how radiant my face looked, but I have very red skin so I'm not sure if the redness just covered it! 

It also claims to have a mango scent, which I struggled to find. It definitely had a fruity scent but I wasn't overly keen on it! The positives of this product however was that it left my face feeling firmer and my primer went on a lot better than it usually does so I'll definitely keep using it just for those factors if nothing else!

Eyes:

Collection Extreme 24Hr Felt Tip Liner

This product is the Collection Extreme 24Hr Felt Tip Liner and is one that I've used before and it lasted a heck of a long time. It probably wasn't overly hygienic for the amount of time I actually used it but hey ho! I love how not only does it lasts for a long time (in relation to over a period of time) but it also lasts all day long! The nib on it is like a felt-tip marker which is extremely precise and easy to apply. It also doesn't do that annoying thing where you apply it, open your eyelid and it's transferred to the top of your eyelid where you've just applied your eye shadow! I think this only cost me about £2.99 which is fantastic value in my opinion for its quality!

This product is the Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil. Ever since I started incorporating my eyebrow routine into my makeup routine, I've used the same eyebrow pencil however I just remember finding it at the bottom of my makeup bag with the writing on the side of it worn off so now that I'm getting pretty down to the end of it, I've been trying to find it in places like Superdrug and Boots but to no avail. Yesterday I was looking in the Rimmel section and came across the exact eyebrow pencil and was so happy I'd found it! As I'm very fair and my hair is a brownish/blonde/redish colour, I find that the colour "Hazel" fits me best and for £2.99, you can't go wrong!

Hair care routine for badly damaged and splitting hair & product review!

Hello!

So today I am going to be talking about taking care of badly damaged, split hair and products on the market that I have tried and tested to attempt to revert the damage that's been done! I explained in my Nourkrin review post the extent of the damaged state my hair was/still sort of is in!

I won't go into too much detail on this post but I have never bleached/dyed my hair so the reason my hair was/is badly damaged is due to the amount of back combing and heat tools I used on my hair WITHOUT heat protector (Yes, I know, but I am paying the price now!) My hair went from super long and healthy to mid length and all straggly at the bottom and the split ends were travelling up my hair fast!

My hair is now (thankfully) growing and is slowly on its road to recovery and that is purely down to strictly no back combing (unless I am going somewhere special), keeping to a routine and using a few different products to ensure my hair has MOISTURE as my hair was also so brittle and ready to break at any second!

 I'm now just going to run through my routine and mention some products which have helped my hair wonders!

Okay so Step 1: I make sure, like I just said, that I do not backcomb my hair unless its a special occasion! I also do not curl my hair (my hair is naturally straight so no need for straighteners!) To be honest... I don't do anything to my hair now. I literally plait my fringe in a french plait and then stick it up in a sort of scruffy bun and pull out bits to give it a bit of volume and height around my face!

So I guess that's Step 2: LEAVE your hair alone. Try not to brush it often as using brushes, damages your hair just as much as heat damage! On that note - STAY AWAY from heat products. I promise you, even with the best protector, if you are trying to regrow and repair damaged hair, heat tools will continue to do damage!

Step 3: Try not to wash your hair every single day...or every other day if you can! I know it sounds wrong but the longer you can leave the oils your scalp produces, the more nutrients it is getting. By washing your hair every single day, you are washing out these oils that are providing nutrients for hair growth! Also by washing your hair every single day your scalp over compensates for the oils you are getting rid of, therefore producing more oils which results in greasy hair! There are so many dry shampoos out on the market, my favourite being Batiste - Tropical!

Step 4: Turn your head upside down and give your scalp a massage. This helps circulation in the scalp which stimulates hair growth! Try and do this for about 60 seconds! TIP: It's very relaxing and provides an awesome volume boost when you flip your hair back!

Step 5: Treat yourself to an intensive hair mask and/or deep conditioning treatment once a week or twice depending on the state of your hair. The usual recommendations are once a week, but that was not enough for my dry, brittle hair. I highly recommend VO5's Give Me Moisture - Hot Oil Treatment or Nice'n Easy ColourSeal Gloss conditioner which you can buy separately from the box dyes for 99p! This is a great conditioner because it is obviously used on colour treated hair, which definitely needs moisture! I usually leave this on for about 20-30 minutes with a sandwich bag covering my hair to keep the moisture packed in! Yes, I might look silly but it does wonders for my hair!

Step 6: If you insist on blow drying your hair, try to minimise the amount of products you use on your hair, but letting your hair air dry is a much more better option!

Step 7: Okay so below I have taken a photo of my favourite products I use when my hair is wet AND when it is dry to ensure moisture is getting to my hair. Each night before I go to bed I completely soak the middle to end of my hair with one of these products and then I will either plait it or leave it down.

Product 1: Expert Collection by Pantene Pro-V Advanced Keratin Repair Split-End Fuser - £6.99
Product 2: Gliss Liquid Silk Gloss Hair Express-Repair Leave-in Conditioner - £1.99 from Savers
Product 3: Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Dry Oil with Vitamin E - £6.99 but I'm sure I got mine for £3.49 from Savers (or there abouts)
Product 4: Argan Oil Heat Defense Leave In Spray - £1 from Savers
Product 5: L'oreal Paris Elnett Satin Heat Protect Styling Spray for Volume - £5.99
Product 6: Inecto Heat Protecting Leave-in Conditioner - £1 from Savers

My hair has improved dramatically since I've been doing all the things mentioned in this post! Don't forget to drink as much water as you can and eat as healthy as you can to really give it a boost! Take care of your insides and it'll show on the outside!

REVIEW: Nourkrin Woman

I've always had very long hair but I always tied it up in buns and hardly ever left it down because it was flat and bone straight and I just preferred it up! However, I'd say about summer 2012 I started leaving it down more and backcombing and curling it quite a lot, more and more each week. I'm ashamed to say I didn't hardly ever put heat protector on my hair and so that along with backcombing deteriorated the condition of my hair dramatically...and fast. My hair went from being near to the bottom of my back to being between my shoulders and elbows. Now, this may seem still pretty long and you're right, it is BUT my hair split so, so badly that my hair was all different lengths and no matter how much moisture I put on it, it was always incredibly dry and brittle with the split ends highly noticeable...I hated this because obviously I've always had long, healthy hair so it was a bit of a shock! I couldn't find a way to get my hair back to its original condition as everything I was doing to it kept breaking and damaging it further!

Finally, I cut out backcombing it and using heat on it all together but I decided it needed an extra boost... Enter: Nourkrin Woman.

Nourkrin Woman is a food supplement you take twice a day; morning and evening with food. You can get either a box containing 1 month supply of 60 tablets for around £50, 3 months supply of 180 tablets for between £70-£80 depending on where you purchase them, 6 months supply of 360 tablets for around £180 or 12 months supply of 720 tablets for around £300. I purchased the 1 month supply for £41 from Holland and Barretts as they had a promotion on, so keep checking different websites as prices vary!

The product claims to prevent hair loss and strengthen the hair you already have. I feel although I didn't exactly have any hair loss, my hair was extremely badly damaged so I wanted to try this product to see if its claim of strengthening the hair you already have, actually worked.

My verdict: I really like this product. I think its helping my hair restore itself to its original condition by feeding it the nutrients it needs to rebuild itself. Although I have only purchased the 1 month supply to see whether I liked it or not, I will definitely be purchasing another box, possibly the 3 month supply! I advise this product to anyone who's hair isn't growing at a normal rate and needs that push to get the hair to start growing again!

Below, I've listed the nutritional ingredients based on a serving size of 2 tablets per day:

Marilex (extract protein compound of marine origin): 600 mg per serving

Acerola cherry extract: 200 mg per serving

Silica: 60 mg per serving

Horsetail extract: 50 mg per serving

D-biotin: 180 µg
